Fresh injury setback for Lucho
Lucho's injury problems have continued after the Olympique de Marseille midfielder was ruled out for three weeks with yet another knee injury. The 28-year-old sustained the knock midway through the first half of Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by AJ Auxerre. Lucho, who had to wait until mid-September before making his competitive debut for OM, will miss cup games against Trélissac FC and AS Saint-Etienne.

Liedson goes under the knife
Sporting Clube de Portugal striker Liedson has taken the chance to undergo knee surgery during the Portuguese Liga winter break. Sporting confirmed on Tuesday that the operation on the 32-year-old striker had been a success. He is likely to be out of action for a month and should therefore be available well before Sporting's UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie against Everton on 16 and 25 February.

Reds to do without Mascherano
Liverpool FC's Javier Mascherano will spend his four-match suspension recuperating from a knee injury. He sustained the problem during Saturday's 2-0 loss to Portsmouth FC, when he was also dismissed for the second time this season. A club statement said: "He suffered a medial ligament sprain in his left knee. He is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks." Liverpool meet FC Unirea Urziceni in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 18 and 25 February.

Rodwell ruled out for Everton
Everton will be without midfielder Jack Rodwell for about four weeks after he pulled a hamstring eight minutes into last week's 1-0 UEFA Europa League home defeat against FC BATE Borisov. The 18-year-old, who represents England at Under-21 level, will miss the Toffees' games over the Christmas period but should be available for their round of 32 tie against Sporting Clube de Portugal on 16 and 25 February.

Liverpool FC ambassador Kenny Dalglish predicts "a difficult game" when the Reds tackle FC Unirea Urziceni in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, both clubs having entered the competition from the UEFA Champions League. "They've got a break until March now I think," said the Scot. "Whether that helps or hinders them, it remains to be seen. Unirea got eight points from a difficult group so we have to give them the respect they deserve."

Jack Rodwell has joined Everton's lengthy injury list after suffering a hamstring knock in Thursday's UEFA Europa League defeat by FC BATE Borisov. Sporting Clube de Portugal striker Liedson will miss his side's final UEFA Europa League Group D match at Hertha BSC Berlin on Wednesday after being rested by coach Carlos Carvalhal. The 31-year-old remained in Lisbon on Tuesday when the rest of the squad travelled to Berlin with the exception of the injured André Marques (thigh) and forward Yannick Djaló (fibula). Sporting are already through to the knockout phase as Group D winners.

Genoa duo face fitness race
Midfielder Omar Milanetto and defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos could both miss Genoa CFC's decisive UEFA Europa League Matchday 6 game against Valencia CF on Thursday. Milanetto sustained a calf injury and Papastathopoulos a thigh problem in the 1-0 defeat of S.S. Lazio on Sunday and will both undergo scans on Tuesday. Predrag Jokanović will lead eliminated CD Nacional in their concluding UEFA Europa League fixture against FK Austria Wien on Wednesday and for the rest of the year due to coach Manuel Machado's current health problems. Jokanović is already on the club's technical staff, while previous caretaker José Augusto moves back to his assistant's role. Celtic finalise deal for Ki
Celtic FC have confirmed the signing of South Korean midfielder Sung-Yong Ki on a four-year contract. The 20-year-old international, recently named the Young Player of the Year in Asia, will join the Scottish Premier League leaders on 1 January after leaving FC Seoul and securing a work permit. Toulouse FC have signed goalkeeper Mathieu Valverde from US Boulogne due to injuries to regular custodians Yohann Pelé and Olivier Blondel, both of whom have suffered long-term setbacks. Everton dealt Yobo injury blow
Everton FC defender Joseph Yobo has played his last game of 2009 after pulling a hamstring during the Blues' 2-2 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur FC last weekend. Yobo, 29, will miss Everton's busy Christmas programme but should be fit come the new year – when the Nigeria team he captains are in Africa Cup of Nations action. "A scan showed a familiar hamstring injury and I should rest until the end of the year. Hopefully I will return a better and fitter player," said Yobo.

Matuzalem will miss S.S. Lazio's last UEFA Europa League Group G game against PFC Levski Sofia on 17 December after suffering a calf injury during the 1-0 derby defeat against AS Roma on Sunday. The 29-year-old Brazilian midfielder is expected to be out of action for around four weeks. Lazio are third in their European section but cannot progress to the knockout stages.
