Wölfli glee as Young Boys return to form

Captain Marco Wölfli said he never lost confidence in his BSC Young Boys team after they put aside an inconsistent spell of form to beat Getafe CF 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League.

Captain Marco Wölfli said he never doubted his BSC Young Boys team after they put aside an inconsistent spell of form to beat Getafe CF in the UEFA Europa League.

Young Boys' 2-0 victory over the Spanish club raised morale in Berne after a disappointing run of results for goalkeeper Wölfli and company. Since their elimination by Tottenham Hotspur FC in the UEFA Champions League play-offs on 25 August, YB had registered one win in five games – against the Swiss Super League's bottom side FC St. Gallen.

The mixed sequence also included a 3-0 defeat by VfB Stuttgart in their Group H opener, so Wölfli was happy to be part of an affirming display from Vladimir Petković's men. "We haven't played badly in recent games even though results haven't really gone our way," he told UEFA.com, "and tonight we were very aggressive and put Getafe under pressure – no team likes that."

The personal reward for the 28-year-old Switzerland custodian was a first clean sheet since 22 August, three days before Young Boys' UEFA Champions League dream was ended at Tottenham. Thursday's overdue show of resistance from the back line – characterised by Wölfli's late double stop from Adrián Corpa and Miku – was supplemented by the attacking verve of right-sided duo Scott Sutter, the full-back, and midfielder David Degen.

The pair combined for a goal in each half, and Degen was quick to share any credit with his team-mate. "I get on very well with Scott," the 27-year-old said. "We have a good understanding down the right and when you have that relationship you can create chances."

The hosts' timely strikes after 11 and 64 minutes were merited on the balance of play, according to Getafe forward Adrián Colunga, who, along with offensive colleague Miku, posed a regular threat to the Young Boys rearguard without ever being able to apply the finishing touch. "If we had scored once, it would have been a different game," the No9 said. "But on the night they were the better team and deserved it."

Left-back Mané also lamented the failure of Míchel's men to make the most of dangerous situations. "We weren't incisive enough on the counterattack and let ourselves down with the final ball," he explained. "We had chances to go in level at the break but didn't take them, and it was the same in the second half. We weren't clinical."

The worst part of the night for a Getafe side still propped up by three points from Matchday 1 was the serious injury suffered by captain and centre-back Mario in the closing stages. The 28-year-old snapped his Achilles and left the Stade de Suisse on crutches, supported by his team-mates. "It's a serious one," confirmed coach Míchel. "The result is now secondary."
