København counting on Steaua success

FC København know exactly which result is required of them if they are to progress from Group E and potentially leave opponents FC Steaua Bucureşti facing a nightmare scenario.

FC København know a 1-0 win or a victory by a two-goal margin would put them into the UEFA Europa League round of 32 and potentially trigger a Group E doomsday scenario for FC Steaua Bucureşti.

Group E permutations
Steaua would be through with a win, draw or if they lose by a one-goal margin other than 1-0 (the score by which they beat FC København at home). Any other defeat and they would need Stuttgart to drop points.

• VfB Stuttgart will be through with a victory or if FCK fail to win.

FCK would by through if they win 1-0 or by a two-goal margin. If they triumph by a one-goal margin other than 1-0, they need Stuttgart to draw or lose. FCK are out if they draw or lose.

Molde FK are out.

Previous meetings
• Steaua beat FCK 1-0 when the sides met for the first time on matchday two, though there was a touch of good fortune about their 83rd-minute winner – a Cristian Tănase cross-shot which needed deflections off Kris Stadsgaard, Stefan Nikolić and, crucially, defender Ragnar Sigurdsson to find the net.

• Steaua's five games against Danish clubs have ended W3 D1 L1 (W3 D0 L0 at home – W0 D1 L1 in Denmark). Their run to victory in the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup started in Denmark, with a 1-1 draw against Vejle BK.

• København's only previous encounters with Romanian opposition came in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage, where they lost 2-0 away and won 2-0 at home against CFR 1907 Cluj.

Match background
• FCK twice beat back markers Molde FK in Group E, but have yet to score against the top two sides in the section – Steaua and VfB Stuttgart, though they drew 0-0 against the latter in Germany on matchday three.

• A 5-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart on matchday five was Steaua's heaviest home defeat in UEFA club competition.

• Steaua's record away from home this season has been excellent. In four games on the road they have the record W3 D1, and have scored at least twice in each of those matches.

Team facts
• FCK's next goal will be their 100th in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League; this will be their 74th game in the two competitions.

• FCK's coach is Ariël Jacobs, who led RSC Anderlecht from 2007-12, winning two titles and a Belgian Cup to add to the one he picked up at RAA Louviéroise in 2002/03. Once a striker with K. Diegem Sport, the 59-year-old coached national youth teams and assisted Guy Thys as senior Belgium boss before returning to club football.

• Jacobs took charge of Anderlecht midway through the 2007/08 UEFA Europa League group stage, steering them through to the round of 32. He repeated that feat in 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12 and thus has never failed to lead a side through a European group stage.

• A right-sided midfielder, Laurenţiu Reghecampf was capped once by Romania and played for Steaua from 1996 to 2000, before finishing his career in Germany with FC Energie Cottbus, Alemannia Aachen and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Since taking up coaching in 2009, he has had eight jobs; he has been in charge of FC Snagov three times, FC Universitatea Craiova twice and CF Gloria 1922 Bistriţa and FC Concordia Chiajna once each, taking command at Steaua in the summer of 2012.
