RC Celta de Vigo got their UEFA Cup campaign off to a perfect start with a comfortable 4-0 win over Czech side SK Sigma Olomouc in their first round first-leg match at their Balaídos stadium on Thursday.
The Galician side, who are leading the Spanish first division after the opening three games of the season, confirmed their fine form. Russian international Valery Karpin opened the scoring four minutes before the break as he clipped in after some fine work by Pablo Coira on the left flank.
Catanha added a second from the penalty spot on 64 minutes after Sergio Fernandez was brought down in the area. Brazilian midfielder Edu then hit a third just four minutes later as his drilled shot squeezed inside the far post.
Neat through ball
Karpin notched his second and Celta's fourth just two minutes before time. Latching on to a neat through ball from Catanha, he outpaced the Sigma defence and rounded keeper Martin Vaniak to slot home with ease.
Three seasons running
Barring a dramatic reverse in next week's second leg Celta, who have made the quarter-finals for the past three seasons running, look to have booked their place in the second round.
