Sørensen ends København hopes

A last-minute goal from Jan Derek Sørensen gave BV Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 win over FC København and a place in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.

A last-minute goal from Norwegian striker Jan Derek Sørensen gave BV Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 win over FC København at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday and a place in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.

Counter-attack
The 1997 UEFA Champions League winners, who did little to please their fans until Sørensen headed home following a counterattack with one minute remaining, would have gone through with a goalless draw as a strike in stoppage time from striker Heiko Herrlich had given them a 1-0 win in the first leg in Denmark.

Kihlsted busy
The home side missed a great chance in the 37th minute when midfield player Jörg Heinrich fired straight at goalkeeper Magnus Kihlsted from close range. The Ruhr Valley club threatened again in the 41st minute when captain Lars Ricken also targeted Kihlsted after being beautifully set up by Czech Republic playmaker Tomás Rosický.

Goalline clearance
København came close in the 52nd minute when striker Heine Fernandez found himself in front of goal after a blunder from the Dortmund defence, but he slipped an the chance went begging. Dortmund, who are in the UEFA Cup after finishing third in their group in the opening stage of the UEFA Champions League, survived another fright 15 minutes from time when Brazilian defender Evanílson Aparecido headed clear on the line.

'We can play better'
Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer was delighted that his side were able to progress from what proved to be a hard-fought encounter in front of 42,500 fans. "I'm happy to spend the winter still in European competition," Sammer said. "It was not easy after the first leg and it wasn't easy talking to the players before the match. All in all, I know we can play better football but I am proud of my team and am also proud that we have stayed in the UEFA Cup. Now it will be our duty not to lose the two or three upcoming [1.] Bundesliga matches."

'Proud of my team'
København coach Hans Bakke was philosophical in defeat but his side will leave Germany with their heads held high after all but matching their illustrious opponents over the two legs. "I am proud of my team and of the substitutes who came on. They deserved to win the match. If you don’t score any goals you don’t deserve to go through to the next round."
