FC Nistru Otaci 0 Aberdeen FC 0 (Aberdeen win 1-0 on aggregate)
Aberdeen FC held on for a scoreless draw against Moldovan club FC Nistru Otaci tonight to clinch a spot in the first round of the UEFA Cup.
The Dons, 1-0 up from the first leg thanks to striker Darren Mackie's goal, were forced to defend for long spells in the second half as the hosts pressed but stayed strong to take their place in tomorrow's draw.
Aberdeen started nervously and striker Sergei Yanchuk's shot almost caught out Aberdeen’s Danish goalkeeper Peter Kjær early on but striker Derek Young then put the visitors firmly in contention. He forced Sergei Dinov to make two great saves in close succession, shot over just before the break and went close again minutes after the restart.
Nistru coach Alexandru Matiura made several changes in the second half, swinging the momentum of the match as his side pressed to take the tie into extra time. Yanchuk again looked dangerous and almost forced Kjær into making a costly mistake on 73 minutes.
Attack in numbers
The Moldovan side attacked in numbers and six minutes later Kjaer was needed to turn a fierce effort over the bar. In the dying stages, substitute Sergei Pogreban dribbled into the penalty area but his cross-shot flew wide.
