Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC 1-0 Boavista FC
A solitary goal by Barukh Dago provided Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC with the slenderest of advantages in their UEFA Cup first round first-leg tie against Portuguese side Boavista FC.
The match, which was played at the Bulgarska Armia stadium in Sofia, began with little in the way of positive attacking play until Bruno Reis tested Ricardo in the Boavista goal on the half hour. Shortly afterwards José Pedro returned the compliment at the other end, but Liran Strauber was equal to his effort.
The only goal of the game came with the next attack in the 34th minute when Reis' pass left Barukh Dago with a clear run at Ricardo's goal. The striker picked his spot and clipped the ball past the Portuguese goalkeeper with ease.
Luiz Cláudio comes close
The second half failed to inspire either team into a different tactical approach, but Strauber had to be on his guard to deny substitute Luiz Cláudio while for Maccabi Reis sent a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar. Before the end, Maccabi's Latvian striker Andrejs Prohorenkovs had the opportunity to make it 2-0, but he was unable to reach the ball after a nice through-ball from midfield, which would have left him in a one-on-one situation with the Boavista keeper.
