Feindouno fires Bordeaux to victory

Djurgårdens 0-1 Bordeaux Bordeaux defy cold and Swedish league leaders.

A brilliant indivdual goal from Pascal Feindouno put FC Girondins de Bordeaux in sight of the next round of the UEFA Cup after securing a 1-0 win over Djurgårdens IF in their second round first-leg match in Stockholm.

Pauleta blow
For the French side the influential Pauleta was relegated to the bench and restricted to a late cameo appearance due to injury. Nevertheless, les bordelais started brightly against the Swedish league leaders, with Eduardo Costa threatening after six minutes.

Feindouno to the fore
With the players perhaps unsettled by the freezing conditions, the play was generally disjointed early on. However the match came to life around the half-hour mark with Bordeaux providing the initial threat with Feindouno coming close twice.

Fine save
After 29 minutes, Costa and Jean-Claude Darchéville combined to put the young Guinean through, but he was denied by a stunning save from Andreas Isaksson. Two minutes later, Feindouno came close again. This time the approach work was all his own, as he beat two defenders only to put his shot narrowly wide.

Johansson miss
Stung by those near misses, the home side hit back with their best moment of the first half. Captain Andreas Johansson capitalised on a botched clearance, but, with only the keeper to beat, he pulled his shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Bordeaux in control
Bordeaux redoubled their efforts in the second half and might have scored twice within ten minutes of the restart. Firstly, Darchéville mis-kicked with the goal at his mercy and then Djurgården defender Mikael Dorsin headed against his own post after 54 minutes.

Feindouno on target
Bordeaux's dominance finally paid off after 63 minutes with a superb solo goal from the irrepressible Feindouno. He cantered clear down the right wing and deceived Markus Karlsson before beating Isaksson at the near post with a well-timed finish.

Swedish fightback
After having been distinctly second best for much of the second half, the home side responded valiantly and came close to restoring parity after Samuel Wowoah played in Johan Elmander, but his goal-bound shot was superbly deflected onto the post by Ulrich Ramé in the Bordeaux goal. Ramé was again called into action in injury time, pulling off a brilliant save to deny Djurgården substitute René Makonoele and put the French side in the driving seat ahead of the return in two weeks.
