UEFA Cup Group E begins for FK Crvena Zvezda on Thursday with Walter Zenga's in-form team full of confidence, five points clear in the Serbo-Montenegrin First League.
Crvena Zvezda's latest domestic success was Saturday's 2-0 home win against FK Javor Ivanjica - and they will want to carry that form into European competition despite the handicap of having to play their group-stage opener against FC Basel 1893 behind closed doors. Zenga said: "I believe in my team. Basel are tough opponents but we want three points. We must be patient."
Boško Janković broke his nose in training on Tuesday but should be able to play with the aid of a protective mask. Zenga will be keen for him to feature - the 21-year-old is a key performer at the heart of midfield. Another midfielder, Vladimir Mudrinić (knee), misses out but defender Milan Dudić has recovered from a shoulder problem.
Basel won 3-1 at home to FC Yverdon-Sports on Saturday to maintain their six-point lead in the Swiss Super League. David Degen, Scott Chipperfield and Matías Delgado scored as Basel coped well without long-term casualties César Carignano and Murat Yakin as well as Mladen Petrić and Papa Malick Ba. The latter duo have trained normally this week and should be fit, but Yakin and Carignano are out.
Basel were beaten 2-0 by RC Strasbourg on Matchday 1, and coach Christian Gross admitted "we need points". "They have a great tradition and they have a top coach in Walter Zenga. They are strong but we need points - and I would have preferred to play in front of a crowd."
