Rangers keep final dream alive

Rangers FC 4-0 Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC (agg: 5-1) Captain Barry Ferguson was on target twice as Rangers moved a step closer to a final on home soil in Glasgow.

Rangers FC can continue to dream of reaching the UEFA Cup final in their home city of Glasgow after powering into the last 16 with a 4-0 victory against Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC at Ibrox.

Dismissal
Captain Barry Ferguson scored either side of a Kris Boyd strike before substitute Charlie Adam completed a 5-2 aggregate success five minutes into added time. However, Rangers will go into their next tie, against CA Osasuna on 8 March, without Allan McGregor after the goalkeeper was sent off in the 74th minute.

Perfect timing
Walter Smith's team started in a frenzy, with wingers Chris Burke and Nacho Novo showing their intent with several driving runs, before the opening goal from Ferguson came on 24 minutes. Burke combined with Novo down the right and when the Spaniard fired his cross into the penalty area, his captain arrived on cue to convert from 15 metres.

Mistakes
Eleven minutes later, Hapoel skipper Josef Abukasis inexplicably tried to play the ball across his own box, only to hit the lurking Boyd on the chest, and the forward ran on to score past the helpless Shavit Elimelech. Ferguson capitalised on another defensive error to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute, moments before McGregor saw red for an altercation with Luciano De Bruno. Novo was sacrificed, making way for back-up keeper Stefan Klos, but Rangers were not put off their stride and Adam slotted in the fourth as the final whistle approached.
