Monterrubio makes Young Boys pay

BSC Young Boys 1-1 RC Lens
The hosts rued a missed penalty as Olivier Monterrubio cancelled out Tiago Calvano's opening goal in Berne.

BSC Young Boys had reason to rue a missed penalty as RC Lens forward Olivier Monterrubio cancelled out Tiago Calvano's opener in Berne to secure a UEFA Cup second qualifying round first-leg draw.

Missed penalty
The Swiss side looked on course for a 1-0 win despite Daniel João Paulo's miss from the spot after 52 minutes as Tiago found the target with a diving header 20 minutes from time. But Monterrubio brought Guy Roux's side back on to level terms within five minutes ahead of the return in France in a fortnight's time.

Lens steady
The Stade de Suisse, which will host UEFA EURO 2008™ games next summer, saw little meaningful action until Monterrubio tried his luck and failed with a long-range effort after 19 minutes. Young Boys looked to take the game to their guests but the Lens back four proved to be equal to the task.

Diving header
All Lens's good work could have been undone as Lucien Aubey conceded a penalty shortly after half-time, but Vedran Runje got a hand to Daniel's effort to make a save. Tiago proved to be a little luckier after 70 minutes as he opened the scoring with a diving header from Hakan Yakin's corner, but celebrations were not to last long.

Red card
Goalkeeper Marco Wölfli had barely put a foot wrong for Young Boys all game, but suffered a lapse as he allowed an innocuous Monterrubio shot to beat him. Young Boys pressed to take the lead again, but the introduction of Eric Carrière eased Lens nerves, and it was the hosts who ended on the back foot after defender Kamil Zayette was dismissed late on for a second bookable offence.
