Atlético too strong for Aberdeen

Club Atlético de Madrid 2-0 Aberdeen FC
Diego Forlán's penalty and Jamie Langfield's own goal comfortably took the Spanish side up to second place in Group B.

Diego Forlán's fourth goal in as many UEFA Cup games and a Jamie Langfield own goal enabled Club Atlético de Madrid to move into second place in Group B with a comfortable home win against Aberdeen FC.

Pernía attempt
Atlético laid siege to the Scottish visitors' goal throughout the match and were worthy of their victory even if it took a penalty and a deflected free-kick to settle the tie. The hosts began as they meant to go on, Luis García racing clear only to shoot wide under pressure from the retreating rearguard. And two minutes later the Spanish side came even closer, Mariano Pernía drilling a shot off the inside of the post from 20 metres.

Forlán penalty
Scott Severin had Aberdeen's first attempt on target after 27 minutes when his low free-kick was smothered by Christian Abbiati but the first half belonged to Atlético and their pressure eventually told. García had twice spurned chances when he skied over the bar on 37 minutes from the area's edge and also when he dragged an angled shot across goal. Nonetheless, Javier Aguirre's men took the lead on the stroke of half-time as Forlán sent goalkeeper Langfield the wrong way from the penalty spot. Thiago Motta had split the defence with a through ball for Agüero, who was felled by Michael Hart.

Simão free-kick
The Primera División outfit scored again on 61 minutes when Simão curled a free-kick over the wall, on to the post and in off Langfield. As Jimmy Calderwood's team tried to rally, Lee Miller missed his kick with the goal at his mercy and, with ten minutes left, Chris Clark drove over from 16 metres. For Atlético, Mista was wayward with a late strike as the Rojiblancos saw out the win that puts them two points behind leaders Panathinaikos FC.
