FC Girondins de Bordeaux joined Helsingborgs IF in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup as Group H winners after a slender 2-1 victory against their Swedish opponents.

Turning point
Marouane Chamakh put the Ligue 1 side ahead after 12 minutes but the lead was short lived as Henrik Larsson, on what could be his final professional appearance, equalised five minutes later. The match turned when Adama Tamboura was dismissed just after the hour mark for Helsingborg, and Bordeaux wasted little time in making the extra man count as Jussiê added a second on 69 minutes.

Cool head
It was the visitors who threatened first, Oskar Rönningberg shooting over from 20 yards, shortly before Chamakh gave Bordeaux the advantage. The Moroccan striker showed great composure to beat Daniel Andersson after being played through on goal by Henrique.

Rapid equaliser
However Helsingborg were back on level terms within five minutes when Christoffer Andersson's corner fell to Larsson via Tamboura, and the veteran striker fired high into the top corner. Florian Marange could have restored the home side's lead but fired wide before Marc Planus directed his header from Pierre Ducasse's free-kick off-target.

Second booking
Nine minutes after the break, Larsson could have put Helsingborg in front but Ulrich Ramé in the Bordeaux goal was equal to his effort. Then Helsingborg were reduced to ten men on 63 minutes when Tamboura was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Mathieu Chalmé. Bordeaux wasted little time in making their numerical superiority tell when substitute Alejandro Alonso's defence-splitting pass reached Jussiê, who slid the ball low past Daniel Andersson.

Wasteful finishing
Gabriel Obertan, Fernando Cavenaghi and Jussie all wasted further chances for Bordeaux and the hosts were almost made to pay for their profligacy, when Ramé tipped a Larsson effort round the post late on.
