Anderlecht primed for Bordeaux test

RSC Anderlecht will look to cling on to a 2-1 lead at FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 as they play their 300th game in UEFA club competition.

RSC Anderlecht are looking to cling on to a 2-1 lead at FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 as they play their 300th game in UEFA club competition.

• Mbo Mpenza struck five minutes into added time in Brussels to give his side a first-leg lead. Jussiê opened the scoring for the French visitors from the penalty spot after 69 minutes but Jan Polák struck back ten minutes later to set the stage for Mpenza's moment of glory.

• This is Anderlecht's 300th game in UEFA club competition. They participated in the first European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1955/56, but bowed out in the first round, losing 6-3 away and 4-1 at home against Hungary's Budapesti Vörös Lobogó – now MTK Budapest.

• The two clubs met in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup third round, with Anderlecht winning 4-2 on aggregate. Nenad Jestrović and Besnik Hasi scored as the Belgian side won 2-0 away in the first leg, and further goals from Aruna Dindane and Jestrovic put them 4-0 up on aggregate in Brussels before two late goals from Jean-Claude Darcheville restored some pride for the French side.

• Current Anderlecht players Daniel Zítka and Walter Baseggio took part in both legs of that tie while defender Olivier Deschacht was twice an unused substitute.

• Current Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Ramé also played in both legs. Marc Planus played in the first leg and came on as a substitute in the second while fellow defender David Jemmali started in Belgium.

• Anderlecht have now played 13 games against French opponents, winning six, drawing six and losing just one. Their previous six ties in France have ended in two wins, three draws and one defeat.

• Bordeaux's nine games against Belgian sides have produced five wins, two draws and two defeats, both against Anderlecht. Anderlecht are the only Belgian team to have beaten Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban-Delmas – the home team having seen off Belgian visitors on three other occasions.

• Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc twice played against Belgian opposition in his long, illustrious playing career and both were international friendlies. He was involved in France's 2-0 away victory against their neighbours in March 1996 and appeared in a 1-0 win against Belgium in 1998, in the run up to winning the FIFA World Cup on home soil.

• Bordeaux have fielded some notable Belgian stars over the years, including playmaker Enzo Scifo and Patrick Vervoort, both of whom also played for Anderlecht. More recent Belgian players include Marc Wilmots and goalkeeper Gilbert Bodart.

• Anderlecht qualified for the Round of 32 by finishing third in Group G. Bordeaux finished top of Group H, and along with Everton FC were one of only two sides to win all of their group stage games.

• Bordeaux's next goal will be their 150th in the UEFA Cup.

• The aggregate winners will meet the victors of the tie between Aberdeen FC and FC Bayern München in the Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March, playing the first leg at home. The first leg finished 2-2 in Scotland.

• Jan Polák, Serhat Akın and Marcin Wasilewski are within a booking of a match ban for Anderlecht, while Bart Goor is serving a one-match suspension after receiving a yellow card in the first leg. Bordeaux's Alou Diarra is unavailable for the same reason.

• Winter UEFA Cup registrations
Anderlecht: In – Thomas Chatelle, Guillaume Gillet, Oleksandr Yakovenko, Cor Gillis, Quentin Crommen.
Out – Max von Schlebrügge, Mohamed Tchité, Cyril Théréau, Mineiro, Walter Baseggio, Sven Kums, Vadis Odijidja-Ofoe.
