A late goal from Moussa Sow saw Stade Rennais FC leave Norway with a crucial away goal, but Norwegian league leaders Stabæk IF gave the French side a stern test at the Nadderud Stadium.

Headed opener
The first leg of the UEFA Cup second qualifying round tie kicked off with the home side eager to attack, but it looked as if their aggressive actions would go without reward until defender Mike Kjølø headed home from a corner eight minutes before the interval. The second half was to prove a more even affair, with a frenzied passage of action seeing Olivier Thomert and Romain Danze have shots cleared for Rennes before Veigar Pall Gunnarsson drew a decent save at the other end.

Important volley
Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez was beaten for a second time on 71 minutes, as Kjølø once more found the target after meeting a corner. However, the excitement in the stands was turned down a notch or two six minutes later when 22-year-old substitute Sow took advantage of some shaky defending to volley Rennes back into the game. Douchez was equal to Tom Stenvoll's chip in added time as Stabæk looked to snatch a winner, but they now have a tough task in the return leg on 28 August.
