Milan Baroš scored from the penalty spot to confirm Galatasaray AŞ's place in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup with the German capital's Turkish community turning out in force to watch them win 1-0 at Hertha BSC Berlin.
The Czech forward made no mistake from the spot after 69 minutes, beating Jaroslav Drobný in the Hertha goal after Steve von Bergen had handled Harry Kewell's cross in the area. A nine-point haul guarantees Galatasaray a top-two finish in Group B, with Lucien Favre's side now needing a victory at Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 5 to book their place in the knockout stage.
Hertha had the first real chance of the game in the fifth minute as Raffael played in Marko Pantelić, who got past Sabrı Sarıoğlu and delivered a fine shot on goal, but Morgan De Sanctis was perfectly placed. However, buoyed by a healthy support, former FC Schalke 04 playmaker Lincoln helped bring the visitors into the match, his strike from distance drawing a good save from Drobný. The goalkeeper was to deny Lincoln twice more before the interval and also blocked an attempt from Baroš .
Hertha improved after the restart and should have scored when Pantelić and Andriy Voronin failed to make the most of a two-on-one situation on the hour mark, while Gojko Kačar's long-range effort was fended away by De Sanctis. Galatasaray then struck from the spot, but Hertha did not give in. De Sanctis tipped Josip Šimunić's header over his bar and then defender Servet Çetin kept out Kačar's shot. As Hertha poured forward, Valeri Domovchiyski squirmed his way through the Galatasaray defence but could not get a strike on goal, and time eventually ran out for the Bundesliga outfit.
