Hamburger SV lost 3-2 away against PSV Eindhoven but will now face RSC Anderlecht in the round of 16 courtesy of their two second-half away goals.
The game exploded into life with less than two minutes gone as Ola Toivonen scored from close range and PSV built on that opening when Balázs Dzsudzsák doubled their lead shortly before half-time. The visitors reduced the deficit immediately after the restart, however, Mladen Petrić putting them ahead in the tie, and Piotr Trochowski's penalty then gave them a cushion before Danny Koevermans' consolation.
Having lost 1-0 in Germany, PSV got off to a dream start with a goal from their first attack, Dzsudzsák finding Danko Lazović in space in the box and the latter's low cross-shot being stroked into an empty net by Toivonen. The home side continued to set the pace and Frank Rost made two good saves in quick succession to deny Toivonen and Ibrahim Afellay.
Rost then made an impressive one-handed intervention to prevent Dennis Aogo turning an Afellay cross into his own net. Eljero Elia forced Andreas Isaksson into a low stop at the other end, but it was the Dutch side who landed the next blow, with Dzsudzsák's piledriver free-kick from 30 metres taking a slight deflection off the Hamburg wall and flying past Rost into the top left-hand corner.
The second half started even more dramatically than the first. With less than 60 seconds on the clock, Petrić ran on to a long through ball from Trochowski and expertly flicked it over Isaksson to put HSV back in the driving seat.
PSV's task became even more onerous when Dzsudzsák was sent off after 58 minutes, and though Guy Demel's dismissal for a second yellow card on 74 minutes evened up the numbers, it was his side who registered next, Trochowski thumping a penalty straight down the middle following Carlos Salcido's foul on Jerome Boateng. Substitute Koevermans headed in from a corner right at the end, but it was too little too late.
