History
• FC Tiras Tiraspol made their debut in the Moldovan third division in the summer of 1996; the course of their new team's history – and of Moldovan football – was to change when the local Sheriff company took over as their sponsors midway through the campaign.

• The club was official refounded as Sheriff on 4 April 1997 under the command of the company's president, Victor Gushan; Akhmed Alekserov, who had coached sides in the old Soviet Supreme League, was put in command and charged with leading the team to the Moldovan top division, which he duly achieved in the space of two seasons.

• Sheriff's first trophy was the 1998/99 Moldovan Cup, which they won thanks to Yuri Romanyuk's 109th-minute golden goal in their game against FC Constructorul Chisinau which had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes; they finished fourth in the league that season and second in 1999/2000.

• All but one of the first nine post-independence titles in Moldova were won by FC Zimbru Chisinau, but their stranglehold was broken in 2000/01, with Sheriff's 3-1 win at Zimbru five games from the end propelling them towards their first title; they have not let go since, with the 2009/10 crown making it ten in a row.

• Other notable achievements in that period were Sheriff's wins in the Commonwealth Cup – the competition for champions of the former Soviet republics – in 2003 and 2009, while they reached a new European high in 2009/10 as they qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stage.
