Barrios and Götze's Dortmund double act

Lucas Barrios hailed his partnership with Mario Götze after their late goals earned BV Borussia Dortmund a 4-3 win at FC Karpaty Lviv in what Andriy Tlumak called an "incredible night".

BV Borussia Dortmund came within three minutes of defeat at FC Karpaty Lviv but after a dramatic 4-3 win Lucas Barrios hailed his strike partnership with Mario Götze.

The Ukrainian side, who knocked out Galatasaray AŞ in the UEFA Europa League play-off round, were soon two down in the Group J opener but with 12 minutes to go went 3-2 up through Denys Kozhanov – only for Barrios and Götze to strike for Dortmund.

Götze had also scored the visitors' second and both his goals followed combinations with Paraguay forward Barrios. "I have a greater and greater understanding with Mario," Barrios said. "Each training session in Dortmund brings us closer and we will benefit from this a lot."

It seemed as if Kaparty captain Andriy Tlumak had made a winning intervention when the goalkeeper denied Sven Bender before his  clearance released Kozhanov to put the home side ahead. Now his team have a difficult job in Group J, where they next visit a Paris Saint-Germain FC side fresh from victory at Sevilla FC, but Tlumak struck an upbeat note.

"We showed that we have good players and don't fear any team in this group," the 31-year-old said. "That was an incredible night for us but from Friday on we should focus on our next challenges. We lost but gave a good account of ourselves. Nevertheless, I'm not going to predict whether or not we will go through."

Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp stressed before the game that there should be no underestimation of Karpaty, who were unbeaten at home in Europe for exactly 40 years before Thursday. That was certainly borne out in Lviv. Visiting midfielder Nuri Şahin said: "We all know the mistakes we made. Considering the way we played it wasn't a good match, but fortunately the outcome was positive."

Defender Patrick Owomoyela added: "We are extremely happy. Winning a match like this will give us an enormous boost for the coming weeks. We had the game under control in most areas and only our own mistakes made it nervous."
