History
• Formed as a works team for electronics company Philips, Philips Sport Vereniging joined the Dutch league in 1914 and claimed a handful of titles in the amateur era either side of the Second World War. Coen Dillen hit an Eredivisie record 43 goals in 1956/57, a landmark which still stands, but PSV showed few signs of competing with AFC Ajax and Feyenoord until the arrival of Kees Rijvers as coach in the early 70s.

• With Jan van Beveren in goal and Willy van der Kuylen up front, PSV began to challenge the established order in Dutch football and, following the acquistion of twins Willy and René van de Kerkhof from FC Twente, won the league twice in the mid-1970s. Creditable runs in Europe followed thereafter, culminating in UEFA Cup glory in 1978, beating SC Bastia in the final having ousted FC Barcelona in the last four.

• The arrival of Ruud Gullit and coach Hans Kraay were the catalysts for the golden era of the 1980s, when the former and defender Ronald Koeman were instrumental helping guide PSV to four consecutive league titles between 1986 and 1989. Kraay and Gullit departed in 1987 but with Guus Hiddink in charge, a team featuring Hans van Breukelen, Wim Kieft, Gerald Vanenburg and captain Erik Gerets won the European Champion Clubs' Cup final on penalties against SL Benfica in 1988.

• Two more league titles followed in the early 1990s under the tutelage of former England manager Sir Bobby Robson, and another in 1996/97. The arrival of Gerets as coach heralded more success as PSV, inspired by a young Ruud van Nistelrooy, won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001, both by huge margins.

• Hiddink's return in 2002 brought more success. PSV repeated their 1980s feat of four consecutive titles (2005-2008) − two masterminded by Hiddink − and also reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2005, losing on away goals to AC Milan.
