The man who got Sweden's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign up and running with both goals in their opening 2-0 win against Hungary, Pontus Wernbloom offers options in central midfield with his tackling, purposeful running and eye for goal. He left AZ Alkmaar to join PFC CSKA Moskva in January 2012.
• Joined IFK Göteborg in 2004 and made his debut the following year, scoring his first Allsvenskan goal on the final day of the season in a 4-2 win over Landskrona BoIS; became a first-team regular in 2006, replacing club legend Håkan Mild, while also establishing himself in the Swedish Under-21 side.
• Won the Allsvenskan in 2007, scoring six goals, the last of them in a final-day 2-0 win against Trelleborgs FF that saw the team home by a point from Kalmar FF; a Swedish Cup runner-up to Kalmar in 2007, he helped Göteborg turn the tables on the same opponents with a penalty shoot-out win in the 2008 final.
• Represented Sweden at the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, starting three matches, before leaving Göteborg to join Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar, with whom he made his first appearances in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
• Although first capped at senior level in January 2007, he did not become regularly involved until his move to the Netherlands; a fine second season with AZ earned him a starting berth for his country in the first few UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers, although by the end of the campaign he had been demoted to a substitute's role.
• Left AZ midway through the 2011/12 season to join CSKA for €3m and enjoyed a sensational debut when he scored a last-gasp equaliser to secure a 1-1 home draw with Real Madrid CF in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
