Videoton primed to claim another Belgian scalp

KRC Genk will kick off their UEFA Europa League Group G campaign against a Videoton FC side who have already proved more than a match for Belgian opponents this season.

Videoton FC have never competed in a UEFA competition group stage before, but their recent record against Belgian sides suggests they will provide stern opposition for KRC Genk.

Previous meetings
• The teams have never met before, and this will be Genk's first game against Hungarian opponents.

• Videoton faced a Belgian side for the first time in qualifying, overcoming KAA Gent in the third qualifying round, winning 1-0 at home and then 3-0 away.

• Contests between clubs from the two nations have been fairly even over the years: in 27 UEFA games against Belgian opposition, Hungarian clubs have the record W11 D6 L10 (W8 D3 L3 at home – W3 D3 L7 in Belgium).

Match background
• Genk featured in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage, but are playing in this phase of the UEFA Europa League for the first time.

• The Belgian club's group stage experience last season was somewhat chastening: they drew all of their home games, but lost all three on the road without scoring, conceding 14 times in the process, culminating in a 7-0 loss at Valencia CF.

• Defeated 1985 UEFA Cup finalists, Videoton are competing in the group stage of a UEFA competition for the first time.

• Videoton have conceded just once from open play in six games in qualifying: since drawing 1-1 at ŠK Slovan Bratislava in the second qualifying round first leg, they have not conceded in five outings – barring two penalties in a 4-2 shoot-out success against Trabzonspor AŞ in the play-offs.

• Videoton are unbeaten in eight UEFA home games – three wins and five draws.

Team facts
• Videoton midfielder Balász Tóth played for Genk from 2007-11, though he spent the final season of his contract on loan in the Netherlands with VVV-Venlo. He scored eight goals in 69 league games in Belgium.

• Genk boast Hungarian talent in the form of goalkeeper László Köteles, who joined the club – initially on loan from Diósgyöri VTK – in August 2009. Genk briefly had three Hungarian players on their books – Köteles, Tóth and midfielder Dániel Tőzsér, who joined Genoa CFC in the summer.

• Videoton's Czech goalkeeper Tomáš Tujvel turns 29 on the eve of the match.

• Genk's coach since August 2012 has been Dutchman Mario Been, most famous for his work as a midfielder – and then coach – with Feyenoord and their satellite club SBV Excelsior. He led NEC Nijmegen through the group stage of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup, but lost out to KAA Gent in the 2010/11 play-offs when he was coaching Feyenoord.

• Videoton are coached by 51-times capped former Portugal midfielder Paulo Sousa, who won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles as a player with Juventus (1995/96) and Borussia Dortmund (1996/97), as well as domestic titles in Portugal, Italy and Germany. He coached in England with Queens Park Rangers FC, Swansea City AFC and Leicester City FC before joining Videoton in May 2011.
