Bordeaux out to overpower Marítimo

FC Girondins de Bordeaux have won their last seven European home games and will look to make it eight as CS Marítimo come to France in UEFA Europa League Group D.

FC Girondins de Bordeaux will look to hold on to their place in the top two in UEFA Europa League Group D as CS Marítimo seek a first victory in the section at the fourth attempt.

• The sides drew 1-1 last time out. Francis Gillot's charges were aiming to end a run of three European away games without a win when Yoan Gouffran opened the scoring after 30 minutes. They could not maintain their lead, though, as Valentin Roberge's quick-fire reply earned Marítimo – who remain bottom of the section – a share of the spoils.

Previous meetings
• The teams met for the first time on matchday three in what was Marítimo's first game against a French club.

• Bordeaux's only previous experience of Portuguese opposition stems back to the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, where they overcame SL Benfica 2-1 on aggregate, drawing 1-1 in Portugal and winning 1-0 in France.

Match background
• Bordeaux have won their last seven home games in Europe, and are unbeaten in ten at Stade Chaban-Delmas (W8 D2) since a 3-1 loss to AS Roma in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage. They have not lost in eight home games in this competition (W4 D4) since a 2-1 reverse against Valencia CF in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

• Marítimo have won just one of their last four European away fixtures, 2-0 at FC Dila Gori in this season’s UEFA Europa League play-offs.

Team facts
• Marítimo boast French talent in the form of midfielder Roberge, who featured for the reserve teams of EA Guingamp and Paris Saint-Germain FC, and goalkeeper Romain Salin, who played for FC Lorient, FC Libourne-Saint-Seurin and Tours FC before coming to Portugal.

• A defensive midfielder, Marítimo coach Pedro Martins reached a career peak with a three-year spell at Sporting Clube de Portugal (1995-98), later representing Boavista FC and CD Santa Clara. He moved into coaching in the lower leagues, replacing Mitchell van der Gaag at Marítimo in 2010 following a spell as the club's youth team boss.

• Bordeaux coach Gillot was a defender who spent the bulk of his playing career at RC Lens. He coached at the FC Sochaux-Montbéliard academy before returning to Lens to take joint charge and then sole command of the first team in January 2005. Subsequent spells with Sochaux and, since 2011, Bordeaux have cemented his reputation as a straight-talking coach with a penchant for attacking football.
