S.S. Lazio saw off one German opponent to set up a UEFA Europa League last-16 encounter with another thanks to a 2-0 win at home to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The contest was just ten minutes old when midfielder Antonio Candreva scored the Biancocelesti's fourth goal of the tie. Álvaro González took advantage of some errant Gladbach defending to add a second 23 minutes later. VfB Stuttgart lie in wait for Lazio, who are now unbeaten in ten UEFA Europa League matches this season.
Gladbach paid tribute to their 10,000-strong following prior to kick-off, but they soon had some apologising to do as a defensive mistake allowed Lazio to open the scoring. Álvaro Domínguez was robbed of possession by the alert Candreva, who drove into the area and dispatched the ball low past the onrushing Marc-André ter Stegen.
An already difficult task for Gladbach became a mountainous one when González doubled the Serie A side's advantage, lifting the ball into the roof of the net from close range after Ter Stegen could only parry Ştefan Radu's angled strike. Another error, this time from Tony Jantschke, enabled Radu to tee up Hernanes for a teasing shot which the visiting keeper pushed away to his left.
The Bundesliga team had scored at least twice in each of their last six European games, yet they were left needing three in 45 minutes to keep their hopes alive. It proved too big an ask of the two-time competition winners, however, who bowed out on the back of their first continental away defeat since a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final loss to Feyenoord in 1996.
