Steely Chornomorets earn Dja Djedje praise

After FC Chornomorets Odesa edged PSV Eindhoven 1-0 to advance, match winner Franck Dja Djedje said his side's positive attitude and stoic defence were key to their success.

FC Chornomorets Odesa match winner Franck Dja Djedje attributed his side's 1-0 win at PSV Eindhoven to a successful game plan that hinged on the subtle arts of patience and organisation.

"We came here to win," said the Ivorian forward after steering his side into the UEFA Europa League round of 32 at the expense of PSV, whose captain Oscar Hiljemark revealed emotions of "anger and disappointment" in the home dressing room after finishing third in Group B. As for Memphis Depay, he struck an optimistic note, saying: "As long as we remain close as a group we'll get through these tough times."

Oscar Hiljemark, PSV midfielder
There wasn't much said in the dressing room after the match. It was a mix of anger and disappointment. It's not a good feeling to go home with, so it's going to be a long night. They only created three chances and we created lots. If we'd scored the first goal it would have been an easier game. The first half was good, but the second ebbed and flowed and we found it difficult to take control. We went into the second half full of confidence but it was tough after they scored. We didn't want to go all-out attack and risk conceding again.

Memphis Depay, PSV forward
We played well, but as soon as we conceded it became difficult to find our rhythm again. After they went down to ten men we started pumping long balls into the penalty area to force an equaliser, but it didn't work. We failed to capitalise on some decent play. We have to get out of this dip together. We'll keep talking about what's going wrong and working to improve, and at some point we'll turn a corner. As long as we remain close as a group we'll get through these tough times.

Franck Dja Djedje, Chornomorets forward
It wasn't an unexpected result because we came here to win. PSV pushed us back for most of the match but we managed to stay strong. The game hinged on the goal; I'm delighted to have scored it. When Sito Riera picked up the ball on the right and crossed it, I knew what I had to do. Luckily the ball went in. I've scored a lot of headers so it wasn't a huge surprise. The plan this evening was to be solid in defence and wait for our chance.

PSV are strong in attack so we had to be organised. The coach told us at half-time to hold our shape. I though our keeper [Dmytro Bezotosnyi] had a great match, although our defence was also solid. It's very important for our club to progress because we haven't done well in Europe over the past few years. It's a great shop window for us to show that we're capable of.
