Also on Sunday, Celta suffered a fifth successive loss. Much changed from the first leg against United, Berizzo's team were comfortably swept aside, Javier Ontiveros beginning a miserable evening for the visitors with a sublime solo effort. The Galician club's fourth consecutive Liga defeat caused them to drop to 12th in the Liga.

Form certainly favours a United side who, despite the odd scare, have won all six of their UEFA Europa League fixtures at Old Trafford this season. So too history, when you bear in mind they have never lost a two-legged UEFA tie after winning the first leg away from home. Complacency may be the biggest danger to Mourinho's team, though given the way their manager has prioritised this competition, his players will be left in no doubt about the importance of making it across the line.
