1977: McDermott treble lifts Liverpool

Hamburger SV 1-1 Liverpool FC
Liverpool FC 6-0 Hamburger SV
(Liverpool win 7-1 on aggregate)

The end of FC Bayern München's three-year run of European Champion Clubs' Cup final wins in 1977 brought the start of a six-year period of English dominance in Europe's top club competition, and 1977 European Cup winners Liverpool FC were to underline their class in the 1977 UEFA Super Cup final.

Hamburger SV had beaten 1976 winners RSC Anderlecht to claim the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and book a UEFA Super Cup final date with Liverpool, but having missed their chance to unsettle the European champions on home turf, they were to endure a miserable second leg in England.

The first leg of the final started well for Hamburg as they took a 1-0 lead at the Volksparkstadion through Ferdinand Keller after 29 minutes, but David Fairclough was to level the scores after 65 minutes, to set up a Liverpool demolition job in the second leg at Anfield on 6 December.

Phil Thompson opened the scoring after 21 minutes before Terry McDermott scored the first UEFA Super Cup final hat-trick with goals in the 40th, 56th and 57th minutes.

With Hamburg's spirits draining, Fairclough scored his second goal of the tie on 84 minutes before Kenny Dalglish made it 6-0 with two minutes to play as Bob Paisley collected his first UEFA Super Cup trophy as Liverpool coach 7-1 on aggregate.
