1991: McClair makes United's day

Manchester United FC 1-0 FK Crvena Zvezda

The UEFA Super Cup broke from tradition in 1991, when it was a played as a single match rather than the customary two-legged tie. The political situation in Belgrade was considered too uncertain to go ahead with a match there, so UEFA European Champion Clubs' Cup winners FK Crvena Zvezda met just once with UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners Manchester United FC.

With their 2-1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final victory against FC Barcelona United had become the first English side to win a European trophy since the country's clubs were readmitted to UEFA competitions following the Heysel stadium tragedy, and they added another European trophy to their collection against the Belgrade club with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Crvena Zvezda had won the European Cup on penalties against Olympique de Marseille, but their luck would run out at Old Trafford where Brian McClair scored the only goal of the game in front of 22,000 on 67 minutes.

With no second leg played, United were crowned champions, manager Alex Ferguson lifting the trophy for a second time, eight years after leading Aberdeen FC to Scotland's one and only triumph in the competition.
