FC Internazionale Milano coach Rafael Benítez will have to do without Thiago Motta for Friday's UEFA Super Cup game against Club Atlético de Madrid after the midfielder failed to overcome a persistent injury to his right knee.

The former FC Barcelona and Genoa CFC player, who turns 28 on Saturday, has been troubled by the knee all summer and finally underwent keyhole surgery in the United States yesterday in an attempt to fix the problem. Motta should recover in time for the start of the UEFA Champions League group stage on 14 and 15 September, but will miss Friday's showdown in Monaco and the Italian champions' first Serie A game against Bologna FC on 30 August.
