Real Madrid CF will take on Spanish compatriots Sevilla FC for the 2014 UEFA Super Cup at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday 12 August.
After 15 editions at AS Monaco FC's Stade Louis II between 1998 and 2012, the venue for the annual meeting of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners now changes every year. Last term Prague's Eden Stadium had the honour; now Cardiff host their first UEFA showpiece at what is an earlier date than usual for the fixture.
Madrid, who beat city rivals Club Atlético de Madrid to lift their tenth European Cup, will be making a fourth appearance and aiming for a second victory. In 1998, in the first one-off Monaco final that replaced the old two-legged encounter, the Merengues lost 1-0 to UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners Chelsea FC and two years later they fell 2-1 in extra time against Galatasaray AŞ, the first team to play in the UEFA Super Cup as UEFA Cup holders.
However, it was third time lucky for Madrid in 2002 when – with Iker Casillas in goal – they defeated Feyenoord 3-1. Carlo Ancelotti, having won with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007, can join Josep Guardiola as the sole three-time champion coach.
Sevilla, fresh from pipping SL Benfica to UEFA Europa League glory in Turin, will be contesting their third UEFA Super Cup after twice featuring in Monaco. In 2006 they downed Spanish UEFA Champions League winners FC Barcelona 3-0, but 12 months later, having retained the UEFA Cup against RCD Espanyol, they succumbed 3-1 to AC Milan in an occasion overshadowed by the death of Sevilla player Antonio Puerta.
Whatever happens on 12 August, Spain will extend their lead as the most laurelled UEFA Super Cup nation. They already have the most victories – 12 – and the largest number of appearances – 20 – numbers guaranteed to increase to 13 and 22 respectively. In the 14 matches since the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League winners began to participate, the score has been 7-7, FC Bayern München 'equalising' for the senior competition by ousting Chelsea FC on penalties in Prague last year.
