Bayern defeat Chelsea on penalties in Super Cup

FC Bayern München 2-2 Chelsea FC (aet, Bayern win 5-4 on pens)
The UEFA Champions League winners required a Javi Martínez goal late in extra time to equalise and then held their nerve in the shoot-out.

FC Bayern München won the first UEFA Super Cup to be held outside of Monaco in 15 years with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea FC following a 2-2 draw in Prague.

The 2012 UEFA Champions League final repeat proved similar to the original as Bayern bossed possession. However, this time it was the Blues who opened the scoring through Fernando Torres, before UEFA Best Player in Europe Franck Ribéry levelled proceedings early in the second half.

Ramires' 85th-minute red card gave Bayern the numerical advantage for extra time, but after Eden Hazard restored Chelsea's lead it took a last-gasp Javi Martínez strike to take the encounter to penalties. There Manuel Neuer saved the decisive kick from Romelu Lukaku to ensure Josep Guardiola collected the trophy for a third time as coach.

The Bayern fans insisted "one more trophy would fit" in their trophy cabinet by way of a giant banner before kick-off, and their hunger was reflected on the pitch. The Bundesliga titleholders ought to have gone in front on seven minutes when Ribéry arrived in space in the box, but the Frenchman, crowned the cream of the continent on Thursday, was unable to apply the finish.

Instead it was Chelsea who struck a minute later, Hazard gliding through the Bayern midfield and feeding André Schürrle, whose first-time cross from the right was swept in by Torres.

Bayern were soon back on the offensive. Eager to live up to his newly bestowed status, Ribéry saw his next effort pushed around a post by Petr Čech and then fizzed another shot wide, but the French international's first-half frustrations manifested themselves in a magnificent equaliser within minutes of the restart. Collecting Toni Kroos' pass on the left, the winger strode forward before unleashing a thunderous strike which seared into the near corner.

Ribéry went close to a second soon after, but his sweet volley from Thomas Müller's deep cross skimmed just wide with Čech beaten. An open encounter ensued, with Dante's inadvertent slip almost catastrophic for Bayern as Torres seized possession and teed up the unmarked Oscar, whose dink was expertly denied by the scrambling Manuel Neuer.

Neuer was again on hand to claw away Branislav Ivanović's header but had the crossbar to thank for keeping out an attempt from David Luiz. Ramires' dismissal for a second booking looked like it might swing things in Bayern's favour, but as the game continued into extra time it was Chelsea who retook the lead.

Three of the 30 additional minutes had elapsed when Hazard punished Bayern for some complacent defending by cutting inside and applying a fierce low finish. Again Bayern replied, though, making good on a flurry of late threats as Javi Martínez slotted in at the death to send the match to penalties. After nine conversions, Lukaku saw his shot saved and Bayern lifted the trophy for the first time.
