Celtic 1-1 Valencia(Valencia win 4-3 on pens)
Substitute Ismael Martínez's 87th-minute equaliser forced penalties for ten-man Valencia at Celtic Park. Trailing to Jack Aitchison's composed finish, Valencia were up against it numerically when captain Javier Jiménez was shown a straight red card for a foul on the Celtic goalscorer with a little over a quarter of an hour remaining. Aidan McIlduff and skipper Fiacre Kelleher each spurned a chance to win the shoot-out for the Scottish side, whose hopes were extinguished when Antonio Sivera pulled off his third save in denying Jamie McCart.

Elfsborg 1-3 Real Madrid (Kabashi 63; Mayoral 48 84, Febas 72)
A crowd of 6,668 watched Borja Mayoral fire Madrid through. Mayoral had a spot kick stopped by David Olsson in first half added time, but that was forgotten when he put the visitors ahead early in the second period, pinching the ball off the toes of team-mate Aleix Febas inside the area. Arian Kabashi levelled with a lob over Luca Zidane, only for Febas to restore the Whites' lead nine minutes later. Mayoral, instrumental in creating Madrid's second, rubber-stamped victory in a one-on-one with Olsson.

Highlights of an eight-goal thriller

Midtjylland 4-4 Atlético Madrid(Midtjylland win 5-4 on pens)
Both teams led twice in a topsy-turvy affair that was taken the distance by Atlético midfielder Ferni's 91st-minute header. Anders Hagelskjær converted the decisive penalty – Midtjylland's fifth of a perfect shoot-out – after Andreas Raahauge had repelled Atlético's second attempt, from Toni Moya.

Příbram 2-2 CSKA Moskva(Příbram win 5-4 on pens)
Příbram made it 2-2 with 19 minutes left, Jiří Januška equalising from the spot after CSKA captain Mutalip Alibekov saw red for bringing down Michal Hlavatý inside the box. The Army Men's fifth penalty – taken by Renat Yusupov – was saved by Martin Jedlička, teeing up Januška to settle matters.

Watch Roma hit Salzburg for four

Salzburg 0-4 Roma(Marchizza 8pen, Umar 17, Soleri 39, Di Livio 72)
The early dismissal of Dayot Upamecano for a foul on Edoardo Soleri set the tone for a miserable afternoon for Salzburg. Riccardo Marchizza's subsequent penalty was soon followed by Sadiq Umar heading in a corner, and it was 3-0 before the break when Soleri dived to nod in captain Lorenzo Vasco's free-kick. Lorenzo Di Livio rounded off the scoring by running more than half the length of the pitch and powerfully beating Bartłomiej Żynel from the edge of the box. A late red card for midfielder Benjamin Kaufmann compounded a forgettable match for the hosts.
