Aleix Febas hit a stunning long-range winner with the last kick of the match as Real Madrid CF survived a thorough examination from SSC Napoli to book a place in the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals.
The Spanish side were dominant in the first half and ought to have had more to show for it than Javier Muñoz Jimenez's 15th-minute strike. They looked set to be punished for their profligacy when Napoli came out with redoubled intensity and deservedly levelled through Igor Łasicki's thumping 71st-minute header. The visitors threatened a second before they were knocked out by substitute Febas's majestic sucker punch.
"The way the game ended was dramatic," said Madrid coach Luis Miguel Ramis, whose team will travel to Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight. "But I think the result was just reward for the side that played the better football, had more of the ball and which, in the first half alone, had enough chances to kill the game off."
Indeed, with Muñoz Jimenez and Marcos Llorente combining creativity and industry, Napoli were overwhelmed in the first 45 minutes. Enzo Fernández teed up Muñoz Jimenez for the opener but Madrid skipper Fernández, son of Zinédine Zidane, wasted two glorious chances to extend the advantage.
Napoli subsequently gained a foothold and Łasicki set up a grandstand finale. With penalties looming, the Italian side cleared Jaime Sánchez's header off the line, only for Febas to lash in the loose ball.
