Schalke hit back against ten-man La Real

Real Sociedad de Fútbol 1-2 FC Schalke 04
Schalke came from behind against ten-man opponents, with substitute Maurice Multhaup scoring the winner.

Maurice Multhaup scored the winner 16 minutes from time as FC Schalke 04 rallied from a goal down against ten-man Real Sociedad de Fútbol to set up a UEFA Youth League quarter-final at Chelsea FC next month.

La Real responded to the setback of having Andoni Ugarte dismissed six minutes into the second half by taking the lead through Luca Sangalli. They could not hold on, though. Miles Müller equalised after the hour mark and, with a little over a quarter of an hour remaining, Multhaup landed the decisive blow.

A crowd of 7,000 at the Anoeta witnessed the home side, through the lively Alvaro Odriozola, look the more likely to make a breakthrough in the opening period. If the first 45 minutes were somewhat quiet, the second started with a flurry of activity as Ugarte was shown a straight red card for a foul on Felix Platte.

A man down, the Basque team were soon a goal up thanks to Sangalli, who capitalised on a loose pass in the visitors' defence. The advantage lasted ten minutes. Platte was denied by goalkeeper Ander Bardaji, but the rebound fell to Müller. Multhaup, on at the interval, completed the comeback following a cross from the right.

Schalke coach Norbert Elgert said: "Real Sociedad showed they are a team with great quality. Now we are thinking about the next game. We know that playing Chelsea will be very difficult, but we want to continue in the UEFA Youth League."
