Denmark are in their first UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals since 2003 and needed a last-gasp Yussuf Poulsen header against elite round Group 3 hosts Greece to end that wait and deny the Republic of Ireland a berth. But hopes had always been high for this squad, and their highly rated forward Viktor Fischer, the grandson of Poul Pedersen, who was the first man to be capped 50 times by Denmark and captain of the 1960 Olympic silver-medallists.

Fischer, in fact, equalled a competition record with his five goals against Lithuania in the qualifying round while Kenneth Zohore seemed to have won the opening elite round game against the Republic of Ireland with a 77th-minute strike only for Denmark to concede an equaliser. But two days later Frederik Holst's late goal defeated Latvia and in the decider Poulsen came off the bench to strike in added time. Coach Thomas Frank said: "My team have great potential and I am certain that in the finals, where they will not have the stress of qualification, they will be at their best."
