Scotland book their passage to Malta

Scotland topped UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round Group 6 on home soil with a 100% record to advance to the finals in Malta.

Scotland completed their passage to the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals in Malta, with a 1-0 win against Romania at Rugby Park their third elite round Group 6 success.

Under Mark Wotte and Scot Gemmill after Scott Booth stepped down just before the mini-tournament, Scotland were already sure of top spot after following up a 2-0 triumph against Bosnia and Herzegovina with a 3-1 victory over Belgium They made it a clean sweep in Kilmarnock. Scott Wright curled a right-footed free-kick over the wall and past Romania goalkeeper Arpad Tordai after just two minutes. Encouragingly for Scotland, all six of their Group 6 goals were scored by different players.

Good chances followed in the first half for Craig Wighton and Ross Finnie, but both were off target, and Wighton had another opportunity early in the second period but nudged his shot wide after being put clear. Calvin Miller also caused problems for the visitors with tricky play on the right wing. Octavian Deaconu was Romania's most likely scorer, testing Devlin Mackay with some powerful left-footed efforts.

Bosnia and Herzegovina finished second in the section, building on a 1-0 win against Romania in their second game with a 3-0 victory over Belgium today, in which Amer Gojak notched his second and third Group 6 goals.
