Portugal and hosts Slovenia are the first two teams through from the UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying round after taking the top two places in Group 6 and leaving Northern Ireland facing a wait to see if they too will make the elite round.

Full results and standings

  • Portugal last month won a four-team tournament hosted by champions England and started in Slovenia by beating Northern Ireland 3-0.
  • Portugal then overcame hosts Slovenia 1-0 in a tight game with a brilliant last-minute José Gomes volley to go through as group winners with a game to spare.
  • Portugal's squad included goakeeper Fábio Duarte, who started last season's semi-final loss to England in Malta seven days after turning 16.
  • Slovenia defeated Turkey 5-0 courtesy of four goals from captain Jan Mlakar, including two penalties, the first coming after Ali Aydin was sent off.
  • Northern Ireland then defeated Turkey 4-3, substitute Shea Conaty striking three minutes into added time.
  • Northern Ireland had led 2-0 and 3-1 against Turkey, who were thereby eliminated before Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Portugal.
  • Slovenia clinched second place on goal difference after holding Northern Ireland 0-0.
  • Northern Ireland must wait to see if they will be one of the five third-placed teams with the best record against the top two in their group.

I am very pleased with our performance. The boys played at the expected level. We were the best team and we deserved to win this tournament.
