José Gomes crowned U17 EURO top scorer

José Gomes has finished as the top scorer at the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, his seven goals in Azerbaijan also making him the competition's all-time leading marksman.

Seven-goal Portugal forward José Gomes has finished as the top scorer at the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

The Benfica forward found the net during four of his five starts in Azerbaijan – he was rested for all but the last few minutes of Hélio Sousa's side's matchday three encounter with Belgium – and registered the only hat-trick of the final tournament, against Austria in the last eight.

Not on target in Portugal's final victory against Spain on penalties, Gomes surpassed La Roja's Paco Alcácer as the most prolific player in the competition's history with his treble-sealing goal in that 5-0 defeat of Austria. The Guinea-Bissau-born striker took his tally to 12 for the campaign and 16 overall (he scored four in 2014/15 qualifying) with a header, his fifth of a fruitful two weeks in Baku, in the subsequent 2-0 triumph over the Netherlands.
