He may have shared the scoring plaudits at the 2006 finals with Turkey's Ílhan Parlak but Spain striker Alberto Bueno had an extra reason to celebrate at the conclusion of the final against Scotland at the Stadion Miejski in Poznan having scored both his side's goals in a 2-1 win.

The Real Madrid CF forward made a slow start to the 2006/07 international season, coming on as an 85th-minute substitute in the 4-0 win against Sweden with which his side opened their Elite round campaign. Bueno was included from the start in the next fixture, against Cyprus, and repaid coach Ginés Meléndez with two goals in an 8-1 win, adding another as a subsequent 3-1 victory against Germany sent Spain into the final tournament as Group 7 winners.

The striker carried that form into the finals in Poland, opening the scoring in his side's first two Group B games, a 5-3 victory against Turkey and a 4-0 defeat of Scotland. With a semi-final place assured Bueno sat out Spain's concluding group game, a 1-1 draw with Portugal, but was back among the goals in the last four, rounding off an emphatic victory against Austria with the fifth and final goal in the 88th minute. The crowning glory, however, was still to come as Bueno sealed Spain's third U19 title in five years, opening the scoring in the 51st minute with an exquisite lob before scoring the trophy-clinching goal from Gérard Piqué's unselfish pass 19 minutes from time.

"I've been dreaming about this all my life," said Bueno. "It's very important for people of our age to get the chance to play in this kind of tournament and we're very happy to have won it. We've played very well and it's always good to score but I have to thank my team for providing me with those opportunities. People think that the most important thing for a forward is to score but it's more important to help your team in every way and not just contribute goals. On this occasion my goals have won us the final and of course I'm very happy because my dreams have been realised."
