Denmark sweep through Group 2

Denmark scored nine goals, including five from Yussuf Poulsen, in winning all three Group 2 fixtures, hosts Cyprus joining them in the December draw for the elite round.

Denmark qualified from the 12th and final UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying round section with something to spare, scoring three goals in each of their Group 2 fixtures to top the table with hosts Cyprus joining them in the elite round draw.

Thomas Frank's team began as they meant to go on with a 3-1 defeat of Cyprus in which Yussuf Poulsen scored twice. The Lyngby BK forward added two more goals, including an 89th-minute winner, as Denmark – who had trailed 2-1 until Pierre Højbjerg levelled three minutes from time – fought back to overcame Montenegro 3-2 in a match both teams ended with ten men. Poulsen took his personal mini-tournament tally to five goals with the opener in a 3-0 defeat of Finland on the final day.

"I'm very happy we have qualified with a 100% record", Frank told UEFA.com. "These players have come impressively through the U17s and they once again need to be congratulated. They performed fantastically against three opponents who may not be big names in world football but are still quality sides. We struggled at times throughout all the games but came out on top and that's credit to my players. We now look towards the draw. I hope we have a little luck and avoid some of the big names out there."

Cyprus, meanwhile, bounced back from their opening loss to the Danes to beat Finland – 2-0 victors against Montenegro on matchday one – thanks to Adamos Andreou's second-half strike. With Finland losing to Denmark in their final fixture, a 1-1 draw against Montenegro was enough for Cyprus to progress to the draw in Nyon on 5 December.

"It feels great to have qualified again," added Cyprus coach Apostolos Makrides, whose team also reached the elite round 12 months ago. "It's a unique thing for Cyprus to repeat the trick of reaching the elite round. This was a hard group though. All three teams were tough, so no game was easy for anyone."
