'More to come' from Spain and Netherlands

The victorious Group A coaches, Spain's Luis de la Fuente and Wim van Zwam of the Netherlands, both recognise there is still room for improvement in their teams.

SPAIN 1-0 PORTUGAL
Luis de le Fuente, Spain coach
Portugal have great players and compete to a very high standard. It was a very difficult game in which we had to overcome many obstacles. They put us under pressure right till the end. We were well prepared mentally and physically to face a game of this importance. Looking at things positively, we had 25 very good minutes tonight while every player put in an immense effort. We are very happy in a lot of ways but there are improvements and corrections to be made. [For the goal] it was an extraordinary pass from José Rodríguez over the top of the defenders; Sandro's subsequent control and finish was magnificent. An important team – as we try to be – have players who can offer various different things. We need to protect and look after players like that. Talent like that can be used to unbalance opponents.

Lithuania showed very good spirit to come back from 2-0 behind, but we already knew they had that. This win is a bonus for us
Wim van Zwam

Emílio Peixe, Portugal coach
It was a pretty good game against a very strong and high quality team. I don't feel that the result was fair on us. I congratulated my players for the great performance they put in. They showed great attitude and tried their best from the first minute to the last. We tried to impose our own way of playing. The players were superb. We honoured the shirt of the Portuguese national team. Spain's goal came about due to a lack of attention from our defenders. We made some defensive mistakes during the game. We were aware that Spain could do that, they are capable of playing more directly at times. This was just the first match and the tournament is not over yet. We are still very much alive.

LITHUANIA 2-3 NETHERLANDS
Antanas Vingilys, Lithuania coach
We started a little bit nervously, we made some mistakes and we were punished. If we had held on for the draw it would have been a great result but I have to admit that the strongest team won today. Our tactics worked well today; it was our plan to wait for our chance on the counterattack and it worked well, but we lost. We need some luck to beat a side like the Netherlands.

Wim van Zwam, Netherlands coach
Some of the players were too confident I think. We passed the ball without trying to score another goal, we already knew that Lithuania are strong from free-kicks and that's how we conceded a goal. That's their quality; they were back in the game. We relaxed too much. At the end of a game you always have one or two good chances and they scored a beautiful goal from an excellent counterattack, so we're lucky that we scored the winning goal in the dying seconds. We have to raise our level for the next match, that's for sure, and focus on the game for the whole time. Lithuania showed very good spirit to come back from 2-0 behind, but we already knew they had that. This win is a bonus for us.
