Selke enjoys Germany's strong start

Davie Selke was "definitely very happy" after contributing two goals to Germany's defeat of Bulgaria, although it was a "very, very important" win that gave him more pleasure.

Davie Selke was delighted from both a personal and a team perspective after inspiring Germany to victory on the opening day of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Everyone was telling me I'd score an early goal and I said 'We'll see!'

The SV Werder Bremen striker scored twice in Gyor as Germany – back in the finals for the first time since 2008 – marked their tournament return with a 3-0 win against Bulgaria, and described himself as: "Definitely very happy. It's very important to start the tournament with a win and I'm delighted to have been able to contribute to that with two goals."

The first of those strikes was an assured volley with less than a minute on the clock, and Selke acknowledged the start could hardly have been better. "Everyone was telling me I'd score an early goal and I said 'We'll see!'" he told UEFA.com. "Getting such a great start, with the early goal, was really important and helped us a lot. The goals were both great passes and I'm happy I was able to convert them."

With Serbia and Ukraine playing out a 1-1 draw in the opening Group B game, Germany are the section's early leaders, although Selke was keen to emphasise the need to build on the opening victory. "It was very, very important. We're taking it step by step, game by game, but starting with a win was vital. We want to be more concentrated, lose the ball less often and make sure we win the next game as well."

Aside from his scoring success in this competition, the tall forward managed nine goals in 18 league starts for Bremen's second team and is eager for more for club and country. "I feel great at the moment," he said. "It's a great pleasure to play for Germany and to do so in an international tournament is all the better.

"At Bremen I was promoted to the first-team squad, I've had a look at it and I can taste it a little bit – and that makes me feel pretty good. I know my coach at Bremen, Robin Dutt, is in close contact with Marcus Sorg and maybe he'll see these games. I don't think it'll be a disadvantage to put in some good performances here."
