"Overwhelming" was the key emotion among Germany's victorious players after the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final, with match winner Hany Mukhtar and top scorer Davie Selke both struggling to put the success into words.

Mukhtar scored the only goal against Portugal as Germany claimed the title for the second time, adding to their 2008 success, and the Hertha BSC Berlin midfielder's joy was clear to see. "I'm overwhelmed; I'm so happy," he told UEFA.com. "When I scored, I was just thrilled. I want to thank my family and everyone who's supported me all the time – it's a great moment. We've worked so much for this – and now it's time to celebrate."

The match was notable for the first game of the finals in which Selke had failed to find the net, although with six goals in his first four appearances the striker still took the scorers' prize, and was perfectly content with his lot. "It doesn't matter so much if I scored or not – I'm so happy for the team," he said. "I'm so proud to be part of this team and I'm so overwhelmed.

"This is enormous, enormous," the SV Werder Bremen forward added. "This is enormous, enormous. It's massive for the team and massive for Germany. I'm happy for the team and the country. We're very lucky that we've represented Germany in a good way: two trophies in one summer – I know this is a youth title but it's amazing."

German celebrations were already started in earnest at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion and the party looked set to continue long into the night. "We'll see how we celebrate – I'm not the one who has to organise it!" Mukhtar laughed. "It's a great victory, the biggest I've had so far in my life."
