A goal 11 minutes from time gave elite round Group 6 hosts Austria victory against Italy and UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualification ahead of Scotland.

All four teams were in contention as the final day began, with Scotland on four points, Austria three, Italy two and Croatia one. Scotland looked like they had done enough when they equalised on 65 minutes against Croatia, but Austria – who had earlier trailed Italy – went ahead through Sascha Horvath and will travel to Greece for the finals in July. Horvath and tall striker Marko Kvasina stood out for Austria.

Austria had begun with a 2-1 loss to Scotland but recovered two days later to defeat Croatia 2-0, while elsewhere Italy drew with both the hosts' opening opponents. On the final day Scotland, Austria and Italy all swapped the lead before Hermann Stadler's team ended up on top.

Stadler said: "We had to fight until the last minute to win the group. After the loss against Scotland, we were under a lot of pressure. We knew we had to win the next two games and we needed help from Croatia. Today we played our best game of the tournament – we had a lot of chances and even when we went 1-0 down we never gave up. So it was a victory because of our passion and fighting spirit. I am very proud of my team."
