Portugal and Czechs win through

Portugal and the Czech Republic reached the final of the Vale do Tejo tournament, recording first-day victories against Estonia and Slovenia respectively.

Portugal and the Czech Republic reached the final of the Vale do Tejo tournament, recording victories against Estonia and Slovenia respectively, as both countries warm up for this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Portugal flurry
Hosts Portugal defeated Estonia 3-0 on the tournament's opening day thanks to goals from Hugo Almeida, Silvestre Varela and Manuel Fernandes. José Couceiro's side had to wait until the second half at the Estádio Municipal de Rio Maior, but Hugo Almeida finally made the breakthrough after a series of misses in the 61st minute, tapping in following a goalkeeping error. Silvestre Varela doubled the advantage from Yannick Djaló's cross on 77 minutes, before Manuel Fernandes fired in a third with seven minutes remaining.

Czech strength
Portugal will now face the Czechs in Thursday's final after Ladislav Škorpil's men proved too strong for Slovenia, winning 2-0 at the Estádio Municipal de Alcanena. Midfielder Ladislav Volešák, who has just returned to AC Sparta Praha following a successful loan with SK Dynamo Ceské Budéjovice, scored both goals, breaking the deadlock with a 54th-minute free-kick before sealing victory 15 minutes later with a fine volley. Estonia will meet Slovenia at the Estádio Municipal do Cartaxo in the third-place play-off.
