Ribeiro saves the day for Portugal

Goalkeeper Paulo Ribeiro saved two penalties as Portugal won the Vale do Tejo tournament in a shoot-out following a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic.

Fillo opener
A much-changed Portugal lineup had the better of the first half and almost took the lead as early as the third minute when Vieirinha missed following a cross by João Moreira. Paulo Machado then tested Zdeněk Zlámal with a powerful shot from outside the area, before Silvestre Varela fired wide when well-placed. As the home side piled on the pressure, Diogo Valente could have put José Couceiro's team ahead after dribbling around Zlámal, only for Martin Klein to clear off the line. In the event, it was the visitors who went in front on 32 minutes, Martin Fillo heading Mario Holek's clever flick-on past Ribeiro.

Ribeiro heroics
Portugal continued to fall short in front of goal in the second half, Moreira squandering a chance within seconds of the restart. The hosts finally broke through on the hour, though, Semedo providing the finishing touch to a goalmouth scramble after Nani's shot had rebounded off the post. Ricardo Vaz Té's 73rd-minute header brought a fine save from Zlámal, who took the tie to penalties by keeping the scores at 1-1 late on. He could not, however, repeat the feat in the shoot-out, when his opposite number Ribeiro took the plaudits by saving twice to ensure a 4-1 win. In the third-place play-off at the Estádio Municipal do Cartaxo, Slovenia were 4-1 victors against Estonia.
