Pearce points to 'collective' failings

Stuart Pearce said he wanted more from his England players after a 0-0 draw with a Czech team whose coach Ladislav Škorpil was happier with the outcome.

Ladislav Škorpil, Czech Republic coach
It was a quality match - interesting tactically. Both teams had chances to win - we had two really good ones, one which hit the bar. We had to make an early change when Daniel Kolář was injured and in the second half I decided to take off a defender and bring on a midfielder. We can take positives from the game, especially the team spirit and the fact that we can play together as a team. We weren't able to see that in the warm-up matches because we had so many injuries. As I said yesterday, I wasn't sure about my lineup but the team did well. Historically we lose our first game so after getting this point, we can be confident.

Stuart Pearce, England coach
We're disappointed as we can play a lot better. They did their homework and got a man on Tom [Huddlestone] to stop him passing. We were not on the front foot enough, did not put pressure on them and the game fizzled out. We're collective - if anyone does well, the whole squad takes credit, if a player misses a penalty the whole squad is responsible. We don't think any worse of Leroy [Lita]. I can assure you he'll have the confidence to step up again and take a penalty in the next match. The nature of the game means you can't guarantee performances. They got behind us a couple of times, lapses possibly, so we'll have to work on that and work on facing the Italians. [Defenders] Steven Taylor and Anton Ferdinand should be available for Thursday and it might be a tougher game so we'll have to play better.
