Portugal made it two wins from two games in Group 3 with a convincing victory against Montenegro in qualifying for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Early advantage
Rui Caçador's men were largely in control from kick-off and it took them just 18 minutes to go in front at the Dr. Jorge Sampaio stadium in Vila Nova de Gaia. Vieirinha's cross was won in the air by João Moreira, and the CD Nacional striker took the ball beyond two opponents before beating Montenegro goalkeeper Ivan Janjuševic with a right-foot shot.

Fernandes double
Montenegro responded well and almost drew level on 25 minutes when Stefan Jovetić’s effort flew narrowly wide. Portugal, however, made sure of all three points in the 58th minute when Nuno Coelho headed home Vieirinha's corner. Valencia CF midfielder Manuel Fernandes sealed the hosts' success with goals on 66 and 89 minutes, first taking advantage of another superb pass by Vieirinha before seeing his free-kick take a fortuitous deflection to score. The result leaves Portugal level on six points with England after two matches.
