Germany claim record victory

Defending champions Germany remain in contention in Group 5 of 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying after beating San Marino 11-0 to record their biggest competitive victory at this level.

Hummels hat-trick
Germany had collected just four points from their opening three fixtures to trail the Czech Republic and Iceland by eight points. While they remain eight adrift of the Czechs, 2-1 victors over Northern Ireland, Rainer Adrion's side are now five behind Iceland with a game in hand on both. It took just four minutes for Mats Hummels – who later added the seventh and tenth goals to claim a hat-trick – to open the scoring with a header. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Daniel Schwaab from the penalty spot, Holger Badstuber and André Schürrle all got in on the act to give the visitors a 5-0 half-time lead.

Bargfrede's eleventh
Five became six when Sidney Sam turned in from close range four minutes after the break, before Hummels scored his second and his team's seventh. FC Bayern München's Thomas Müller and substitute Richard Sukuta-Pasu both beat Eros Gobbi prior to Hummels completing his hat-trick and Philipp Bargfrede adding the eleventh with eight minutes to play. Northern Ireland visit San Marino in March, when Germany host Iceland.
