The Netherlands' squad got one player lighter on Thursday after Bram Nuytinck withdrew from the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with a knee injury.

The Jong Oranje defender sustained the problem during his first outing in Israel against Spain yesterday. He underwent an MRI scan today which revealed possible damage to his left knee, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament and ensuring his immediate return home for further tests and treatment at his club, RSC Anderlecht.

Nuytinck, who captained the Dutch against Group B rivals Spain as coach Cor Pot made 11 changes to his starting XI, said: "This is a real setback. It was already difficult for me with the [reserve] role I had, and to go home earlier makes it even harder. On the other hand I do not want to take any risks regarding preparations for next season with Anderlecht.

"Tomorrow morning I will report to the club for further tests. I wish the team a lot of success in the semi-final against Italy. I am sure the boys will reach the final," the 23-year-old centre-back added.
